Having achieved a hard fought victory in the U18 South Powys Tournament back in November, the Christ College 1st XI captained by Tally Dowds travelled to Llandrindod yesterday (30th January) to attempt to retain their regional title for the third year in the row. Standing between them and a place in the National Finals was Welshpool, a young team that had calmly dispatched Crickhowell in the U16 final the previous day.

The match was played in a tremendous cross wind but with a warm sun that encouraged both sides to play open hockey and attack. Right from the outset, however, it became apparent that the Christ College

team simply had too much pace and firepower for the North Powys champions, who struggled to clear the ball out of their own half in the opening quarter. After several shots on goal, CCB soon broke through, scoring two quick goals through Ariadne Bridge and Annabel Jones; the score remained at 2-0 until half time.

In the second half,Welshpool were a much improved side, putting pressure on the Christ College defence, which was well marshalled by vice-Captain and player of the match Jess Doney. The northern side could not, however, break through and when Jones scored for a second time, the flood gates opened. Three further goals from Jones (who broke the school 1st XI scoring record in the process with her 15th goal of the season), Lowri Stephens and Elinor Jones, completed the 6-0 rout in style.

Christ College will now proceed to the National Finals in Wrexham on 5th March for the fourth time in five years. Having lost only one of their 20 matches this season, scoring 71 goals in the process, they will be full of optimism that this time might just be their year to bring home the trophy.
