The Christ College 1st VII and 2nd VII Netball teams put in a superb showing at the Malvern St James Netball Tournament last weekend.

Against tough opposition they battled their way through to the final of the tournament after some tough preliminary matches. They opened their account with a 9-4 win against Haberdashers Monmouth but they were then edged out by a strong Dean Close team by 6 - 5. However they bounced back from this with wins against Shrewsbury 2nd VII (7 - 1) and hosts Malvern St James' 2nd VII (7 - 2).

The Christ College 1st VII then found themselves pitted against the Shrewsbury 1st VII who they defeated narrowly 12 - 11.

The final against Bristol Grammar School was a lively encounter but the Bristol team were just that little bit stronger and deservedly won the final 12 - 6.

Netball coach Mrs Lynne Webber said: "Annabel Jones was superb as captain and controlled play, turning defence into attack and linked well with Lauren Williams and Elinor Jones."

She added: "Catrin Bush and Cara McNaughton shot well in the extremely cold and blustery conditions and Rhiannon Phillips and Lowri Stephens were solid in the centre court."

She concluded: "The girls played exceptionally well to get to the final and were deserved runners-up."

The CCB 2nd VII also competed and were up against hosts Malvern St James in their first match. losing narrowly 7 - 6. They then found themselves against a strong Shrewsbury 1st VII and lost 12 - 6. They drew against Kings Worcester 2nd VII but they then found themselves against the eventual tournament winners, Bristol Grammar School, who won the match 21 - 2 in convincing fashion.

Coach Mrs Webber commented: "Charlotte Pryce played very well as Captain and once again, in very cold conditions, Rebecca Elliott, Kelly Tavener and Bella Fisher shot very well. We were solid in defence and Bronnie Davies, Mimi Welch and Lucy Dale worked tirelessly, linking well with Leonie Halpin and Sarah Davies in centre court."

She concluded: "It was a worthwhile experience against very strong opposition. Our young team competed very well!"
